South Africa Muslims Urged to Participate More Actively in Politics

IQNA – The president of South Africa called on the country’s Muslim community to play a more active role in politics.

President Cyril Ramaphosa recently made an impassioned appeal for members of the country's sizable Muslim population to participate more actively in the country’s political future. 

Addressing a large Eid al-Fitr gathering in the township of Laudium near Pretoria, Ramaphosa highlighted the proud history of political involvement among earlier generations of South African Muslims.

Noting with regret that political engagement has declined in recent years, he said “it is time for change”. The president observed that some minority communities now question their place in the new South Africa due to racial divisions and “internal squabbles” defining politics. While celebrating Muslim leaders of the anti-apartheid struggle, Ramaphosa called on today's youth to help rebuild the nation through participation.

South Africa's 1.6 million strong Muslim community includes many of Indian descent.

The president's remarks come ahead of national elections next month amid issues of employment equity sparking minority concerns. Ramaphosa closed by urging unity across racial lines to realize the goals of equality, shared prosperity and freedom envisioned in South Africa's constitution.

Going forward, reigniting political passion and bridging social fractures will be key to strengthening representative democracy, he said. As Ramaphosa reminded, the future remains unwritten and success depends on collective endeavor. With open and inclusive debate, all of South Africa's diverse peoples can together advance the nation.
